With the new format, Men’s Round 1 is made up of twelve 3-surfer heats. Surfers that place in 1st and 2nd will advance straight to Round 3, while 3rd place surfers will be seeded into the following round. Round 2 will now have four 3-surfer heats. The surfers that place in 1st and 2nd will advance to Round 3, while the 3rd place surfer will be eliminated from the event ranking Equal 33rd place.
From Round 3 onwards, each round is comprised of head-to-head heats involving only two surfers. The surfer that place in 1st in each heat will advance to the next round; the lowest-placing surfer will be eliminated. Round 3 is made up of sixteen heats, and the lower placing surfer will be eliminated in Equal 17th place. Round 4 will have eight heats and the lower placing surfer will be eliminated in Equal 9th place.
